Sahyande Makan - The Elephant Project is an outstanding piece of theatre based on Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon's magnum opus Sahyande Makan (1944). Conceived and directed by Sankar Venkateswaran, this piece is an Indo-Japanese cross-cultural collaboration project featuring Micari, an exceptional actor who has won major evaluations in and out of Japan for over 25 yerars
The performance reveals the inner struggles of a bull elephant who is bewildered between his nostalgic wild fantasies of freely roaming in the jungle and the immediate reality of being a slave of Man
The narrative is set against a temple festival in Kerala where the biggest tusker leads the procession of Gods in the town carrying the idol of the deity on his back. Amidst the noise, crowd, drums, trumpets, fireworks and people he drifts into a bewildering spell due to the excess testosterone secretions in his body and the persistent whisper of devils inside his head. Travelling backwards in time through his wild jungle days, he sees all those wonderful sights, hears the shrill sound of crickets, and consumes the best leaves, honey and wild toddy, all that he needs! What's more? A scent, as profound as enlightenment, draws him deep into the jungle and backwards through time, the scent that wakes the most primordial senses from within. Tracing the scent he walks and falls into a pit from his mother's lap, to become the slave of Man.
